Mona was a founding co-director of DATAlab.

Mona El Khafif is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. She is an architect, urbanist, educator and writer and since 2013 together with Ila Berman principal of Scaleshift – a Toronto based design practice. 

El Khafif graduated in Architecture at the RWTH in Aachen/Germany and received her doctoral degree from the TU Vienna/ Austria. She taught at the Institute for Urban Design and Landscape Architecture at the TU Vienna from 2000-2006 and joined the URBANbuild HUD grant at Tulane University in New Orleans from 2006-2007 dedicated to the city’s rehabilitation after Hurricane Katrina. From 2008-2013 she was an Associate Professor at CCA California College of the Arts in San Francisco where she lead the division’s URBANlab and chaired the college’s new 2 year post-professional Master of Architecture in Urban Design and Landscape program. During her time at the URBANlab she initiated the design build of urban prototypes and temporary installations re-activating urban territories and incorporating digital interfaces.

She is co-author of the award winning publication ‘URBANbuild: Local/Global’ and has published ‘Staged Urbanism: Urban Spaces for Art, Culture and Consumption in the Age of Leisure Society’ in 2009.
